What’s on the Calendar for this Weekend
It may be the last official weekend of summer, but don’t let that get you down. There’s is a lot of events going on around the region to help you end the summer on a fun note.
It’s deemed as the largest festival in the South, and it includes a barbecue challenge. On September 19-20, over 150 barbecue teams will compete for a monetary prize at the 9th Annual Smoke of the Water Barbecue and Music Festival in Hot Springs. And if your opportunity to sample the ‘Q isn’t enough, Tracy Byrd performing on September 19 as well.
- While next weekend is the state of the Texas State Fair (September 26; more on that later), the East Texas State Fair in Tyler is all ready under way. Continuing through September 28, the festival features a carnival, live entertainment, livestock shows and much, much more.
- It’s annual alligator day at Kliebert Tours in Hammond, La., on September 20. The celebration includes music, food and tours.
- It’s all about the music in Mississippi this weekend. There’s the Bullfrogs and Bluegrass happening on September 20 in Horn Lake that features bluegrass bands. On the same day in Greenville is the 31st Annual Mississippi Delta Blues & Heritage Festival. The event ends a week-long celebration and recognition of blues music.
- Join in the celebration of the past and present of Fort Payne, Ala. at the Boom Days Celebration. Scheduled for September 20, activities include live entertainment and an arts festival.
- Wasn’t able to attend Alys Beach’s (Fla.) Digital Graffiti event? Well, you have another opportunity to see the exhibits on September 19 at Fonville Press during a special “artists reception.” The works will be projected at one place in a sequence. Make a weekend of it and attend the Tour (of) the Courtyard Homes on September 20.
- September 19-21 is Shrimp & Grits: The Wild Georgia Shrimp Festival on Jekyll Island. Look forward to a weekend of live entertainment, shrimp eating contest and cooking competitions.
- Experience the end of summer/start of fall Smoky Mountain-style during the Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival in Gatlinburg, Tenn. From September 19 - October 31, a number of events are scheduled that highlights the area.
- It’s everything shrimp at Yemassee (South Carolina) Shrimp Festival ending on September 21. There’s shrimp concessions and a mud run happening during the weekend.
- Discover how the gardens grow in Wilmington, North Carolina during the Secret Garden Tour on September 19-20.
- Nothing is smoother than a shot of Kentucky Bourbon. It’s not too late to partake in the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in Bardstown that ends on September 21.
- Celebrate the Italian lifestyle during Festa Italiana on Virginia Beach, Va., September 19-20. The two-day event features Italian food, beverages and entertainment.
- Take a bite out of a Golden Delicious apple during the Clay County (WV) Golden Delicious Festival ending on September 21. Events include a bake-off, parade and much more.
- Participate in the 6th Annual Maryland Lighthouse Challenge on September 20-21. The “challenge” (PDF file) is to visit the 10 lighthouses on the route during the weekend. If you are in the area, do you think you’re up to it?
