The Origins of Southern Food

by SP on September 26th, 2006

“The Southern United States has a distinct cuisine that draws heavily on influences from various groups that have inhabited the area. The most notable influences come from African-American, Native American, British, Irish, French, and Spanish cuisines. Soul food, Creole, Cajun, and to a certain extent, Floribbean are examples of Southern cuisine. In more recent history, elements of Southern cuisine have spread north, having an effect on the development of other types of American cuisine.”

Marmite Yeast Extract, 4.4-Ounce Jars (Pack of 12)I for one had no idea that southern food had any connections to British fare. On the other hand, the last time we were in Florida, we noticed a complete shelf on British food that we didn’t expect to see. So, I’m going to have to dig a little deeper and see what influence the British really had. Now if I find a southern version of marmite, I’m stopping right now. How anyone can eat the stuff is beyond me! And yes, marmite is very British and completely unedible if you didn’t grow up with the stuff!
