Sweets for Your Sweet: Chocolatiers in the South
Rich. Decadent. Smooth. Sinful. Just give into temptation this Valentine’s Day with some good chocolate.
Creating chocolate is somewhat of an art form. It’s not something that just anyone can do. It takes a special talent and an understanding of chocolate.
Throughout the region, you can find chocolatiers practicing their crafts at their shops. Many, if not all, are open to the public, and some even offer samples before you buy. You just have to ask.
Be prepared, because just after one bite into a truffle or another speciality chocolate piece, you’ll realize you have tasted (and discovered) something truly special. Here’s a sampling (no pun intended) to get you started:
- Find sipping chocolate to handmade chocolate truffles at Wiseman House Chocolates in Hico, Texas. Special for Valentine’s is The Love Letter Collection that include a Love Potion truffle that has a hint of chipotle pepper.
- If coffee and chocolate are two vices in your life, you will enjoy Chocolat’s Cappuccino Coffee chocolate, which is filled with a liquid center. Located in Fredericksburg, Texas, this is just one of the many offerings found here. They also carry wine and spirited chocolates as well - all with a liquid center.
- From chocolate creams to solids, Lexington Chocolatier in Atlanta, Ga., has a variety for even the hardest-to-please Valentine.
- Life is too short to not enjoy a bonbon or two. In St. Augustine, Fla., Claude’s Chocolate’s signature speciality happen to be bonbons. For your special someone, consider the Edible Chocolate Heart Box filled with bonbons.
- The Chocolate Fetish in Asheville, N.C., is home to the “Ecstasy Truffles™” and “America’s Best Truffles™.” You will also find an assortment of bark and frogs, not real ones, but nuts and caramel inside a chocolate casing.
- For those who like Swiss chocolate, a visit to Holl’s Swiss Chocolatier in W.Va., is in order. With stores in Vienna and Charleston, chocolate delights include Dark Chocolate Almond Rocher and a heart-shaped Milk Chocolate Raspberry Truffle.
- Don’t despair if you happen to have a sudden need for Swiss chocolate, and aren’t near West Virginia. Maryland is home to Glarus Chocolatier, with shops in Timonium and Baltimore. Select handmade specialities such as Kirsch Truffle or Rigi Spitz.
- Is it chocolate or pieces of art? The sweet creations at Artisan Confections in Arlington,Va., are almost (note that I stressed almost; it is chocolate, after all) too pretty to eat. Choose from such flavors as Lemon-Hazelnut and Ancho Chili.
