Stretching Out With a Good Southern Book

I never go on vacation without packing a good book to go with me. I rarely have the time to read while I’m home, but for some reason the days are just longer when you are vacationing. And that is probably a very good thing!

Bringing Your Vacation Home With You!

Traveling, in my opinion, is all about making memories that you can enjoy long after you get home. That’s where souvenirs come into play. Whoever thought up marketing all those little bits and pieces that fall into this category was brilliant. Most of the items that you hand over your money for, would be laughed at if you weren’t on vacation. Admit it… lol… it’s true. Some of them are incredibly tacky!! But they are still little keepsakes and you can put them to use after you unpack them! No, they don’t have to go straight into the garbage while shaking your head!

I have used Shadowbox frames on a number of occasions to showcase all of my bits and pieces. I tend to pick up everything from take out restaurant menus, to ticket stubs and pretty much anything else that catches my eye. It is amazing how interesting they can become when they are creatively arranged.

So what is my brilliant idea on using all of these bits and piece?? The shadowbox frames that I mentioned above can be displayed just about anywhere in the house where you have one of those narrow little jut-out walls that won’t hold a normal piece of artwork, and the rest I use them to decorate the laundry room. Is there a room that you hate quite as much? A few bulletin boards strategically placed and you are set to go. Pin to your hearts content. Suddenly laundry isn’t quite as boring as it once was!! Suddenly all of those sun drenched memories come back to put a contented smile on your face!

Things You Might Not Know About Walt Disney World

*Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End

1. November 11, 1965: Walt Disney announces Florida Project. I don’t know if this is true or just a family legend, but apparently my Aunt and Uncle were approached about investing in Walt Disney World. Knowing that much of Florida was swamp, they said no thanks. If it’s true, that has to hurt! My aunt is still alive… must think to ask her the next time I see her.

2. Did you know that there are zillions of hidden Mickeys distributed through the park by by Imagineers. Speaking of Imagineers… wouldn’t that be a dream come true kind of job!!

3. Did you know that there supposedly is 654 ghosts residing in the Haunted Mansion. Source

4. Mission Space at Epcot Center… “Disney describes Mission: SPACE as its most technically advanced attraction and “the first ride system ever created to take guests straight up in simulated flight.” Imagineers also promise that the sensations will be the same as what astronauts experience.” Well, I really haven’t anything to base it on, but last December my father-in-law, my son and myself were to make the trip to Mars. There were to be four of us, but my husband, daughter and son’s girlfriend were lead to a different cabins?? which meant that one person would have to take on double duty. I have to admit, it seemed pretty realistic to me… but that’s what I wanted of course. And when we were told to push a specific button to make something happen, we did exactly what we were told… in case something bad should happen on our flight. LOL… it’s make believe for big people and we were just having a ton of fun??

5. Did you ever wonder what it might cost to build just one ride at Disney World. Well, the next time you are considering going into the theme park business, consider this. “The monorail system could be one of the most expensive rides in Walt Disney World. The price per mile of track exceeds 5 million dollars, that’s just for the track.” I don’t even want to think what the entire system would add up to!!

I could go on and on about the oddities of Walt Disney World, but I will leave that for another post. All I can say is that I can’t wait to go back later this summer.

Used-book lovers ready for giant McKay’s

McKay’s bookstore“For years I’ve heard lovers of cheap books rave about McKay Used Books and CDs, which has megastores in Chattanooga and Knoxville.

Well, the good news for us lovers of cheap book s here is McKay is finally coming to Nashville, with an 18,000-square-foot store at 5714 Charlotte Ave.

“The earliest we will be open is Sept. 1,” owner Anne Jacobson told me, adding that McKay Nashville will start with a whopping 100,000 items (books, CDs, etc.) in the store.”

Oh, I don’t think that I’m going to tell my family about this store. I’m just going to tell them that it’s a place we need to visit and leave it at that. To date, I have never gone on vacation without bringing home an armload of books and I think that with 18,000 square feet to browse, chances are I will find more than one armload. And then there is the fact that I added a few new bookshelves to the unit we already own and I suddenly have more room.

And as far as used books… not a problem with that. I’m still kicking myself for not spending that 200 pounds on that old history of hairstyling book that I saw in England a couple of years ago. It was a massive book that probably would have cost me even more with the weight charges while trying to bring it home. But, it would have been a great addition to my collection!

Can anyone ever own too many books??

Bourbon in Kentucky

bourbon“Fine bourbon is as synonymous with Kentucky as fine horses, and it’s a major ingredient in everything from mint juleps to chocolate candy. America’s native spirit flows here like the limestone spring water from which it’s made. Find out why it is one of the Commonwealth’s most popular exports by touring Central Kentucky distilleries on the famous Bourbon Trail.”

Click here to find a distillery that is close to where you will be vacationing.

Now you are going to need a recipe for mint juleps… (and I have one for you) and I don’t think that I have ever had chocolate that uses bourbon. That’s going to change ;)

Apparently there is a lot of candy in Kentucky that contains a touch of bourbon and a lot of it can be found at Old Kentucky Candies. And if there isn’t something on the list below this doesn’t have your mouth watering… I just don’t know what to say…

Home of Old Kentucky Bourbon Chocolates, Old Kentucky Derby Mints, Chocolate Thoroughbreds, and The Colonel’s favorite (Old Fashion Pulled Creams). The Candyman’s favorite: Bourbon Cherries and The Candylady’s favorite: Bourbon Truffles!! And of course, you are going to want to know the address…

Best Of… Kentucky Loves Colonel Sanders

This month our theme is … Best of. I thought about everything that the south had to offer and it was hard to pin down one thing. And then I thought about something that I have always loved and people are instantly familiar with…  Colonel Sanders

I don’t think that there is a person alive who hasn’t eaten Kentucky Fried Chicken, and I certainly had my share during my university days, but have you ever tried it in a little town called Corbin?? You will see the turn off right from the I75! I haven’t been there in a while, but I particularly remember that the cafe is set up to be just what it was like in 1940s! I must look it up on our next trip down to make sure that it hasn’t changed!

Directions… From I-75 take exit 29, go south on 25 East for one mile, right on 25 West one-half mile.
Tour groups welcome
Open daily 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.
*Souvenirs available… and if you don’t collect something, this might be the start of an interesting collection to pass down to future generations.

Did you know (and this stuff is interesting) at least to me ;)

  • that Harland Sanders first served his chicken from a gas station during the depression.
  • he was born on September 9, 1890.
  • Harland learned to cook so that he could help his mother who was working full time. And this was all before he was ten years of age. It was at this time that he took his first full time job.
  • His first restaurant consisted on one table and six chairs… from the gas station mentioned above.

More Colonel Sanders Trivia

Harland SandersBut Colonel Sanders didn’t stop there. He’s the face behind Kentucky’s Chicken Festival. If you are in the London, Kentucky area from September 27 to the 30th, they are holding the 2007 Chicken Festival! You just can’t pass that up!! But, if you can’t make it, you can still watch. They have web cams set up! Now how cool would that be?? Here and here

There is so much going on, but I must tell you one more thing. For you car enthusiast… there is a car show scheduled for the Festival.

Again, the festival has been voted as one of the Kentucky Tourism Council’s “Top Ten” Events and the Southeast Tourism Society “Top 20″ Events. It has also been voted
“Best Festival In State” by Kentucky
Monthly Magazine.

Official Festival Hours are:
Thursday from 5:00 pm until 11:00 pm
Friday from 10:00 am until 12:00 am (Midnight)
Saturday from 10:00 am until 12:00 am (Midnight)
Sunday from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm”

skillet

*And then there is this… a skillet like none that you have probably seen. And here is one little detail that I thought that you might like… It Requires 300 gallons of cooking oil to fill. Can cook 600 quarters of chicken at one time. Now that is a lot of chicken!! ;)

My Vacation Sunglasses

I don’t know about you, but I tend to always lose something while on vacation. And more often than not, it’s my sunglasses, so, for that reason, I’m choosing a pair of sunglasses that are gorgeous enough to want to wear and inexpensive enough not to mind losing.

If I manage to bring them home with me… even better

Solar Shields - Smoke

Price: $8.95 USD

**And here is a pair of sunglasses that you wouldn’t want to lose… they were Elvis Presley’s Madison Sq. Garden sunglasses. According to this site, they sold for $250,000 dollars on Ebay!

Huntsville, Alabama

spring park

“The city of Huntsville has been picked as one of the Top 100 places to live in the U. S. by Relocate America.

It was the only city in Alabama to make the Top 100. Cities are ranked on various factors including education, environment, economic and housing considerations. For the record, ranked No. 1 in the nation was Asheville, N.C. The state with the most cities making the top 100 was Florida, with seven.”

But it seems that people in Huntsville are talking about more than just the fact that they made the list!!

Gone With the Wind - Headed to Florida

I can’t stress enough the need for entertainment on the way down… for me at least. As you have probably guessed, I hate this part of the vacation, while everyone else in the family likes it?? What is there to like about sitting in a car for two days?? So, when we head down again in August, I’m going to take an epic film with me and my laptop. And I can’t think of a better movie to help soak up the atmostphere of the south, than this one!

Gone with the Wind (Four-Disc Collector’s Edition)

Destination of the Day…

The Gamble Plantation
3708 Patten Avenue
Ellenton, Florida

Gamble Plantation

This is one amazing plantation. It has 2 foot wide walls, protecting it from hurricanes in the dreaded hurricane season and the extreme temperatures of the Florida summer.

It was originally a sugar plantation!
