Events

  • Lake Oconee (Ga.) Music Festival is scheduled for October 16-18, and includes such events as an art walk, taste of the area and of course, musical performances.
  • Make plans now to attend the NAS Jacksonville(Fla.) Air Show on October 25-26. Events include displays, activities and air performances.
  • It’s not too late to attend the New Orleans (La.) Film Festival. Ending on October 16, the festival features numerous films in different genres.
  • The Museum of Aviation in Warner Robbins, Ga., is opening their newest World War II exhibit, Down to Earth: The 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment and the Air Invasion of Normandy on the museum’s gala weekend on October 17-18. The 6,000-square exhibit re-tells the story of D-Day, and features walk-through dioramas on the planning and execution of the operation to free Europe from Nazi Germany. Another feature includes authentic weapons and artifacts from World War II.

Attractions

  • The Alpharetta (Ga.) Arboretum is now opened at Wills Park, on Old Milton Parkway. Described as a natural living museum, it features 26 trees, many native to the region. 
  • The Albany (Ga.) Civil Rights Institute is now opened. The museum details the civil rights movement in Southwest Georgia. Learn about the role that this area played during this important time through exhibits, resource library and more.
  • The exhibit Eating in The White House: America’s Food being shown through December 2008 in the Southern Food and Beverage Museum located at NOLA’s Riverwalk Marketplace. Other exhibits include the permanent The Museum of the American Cocktail and Louisiana Eats! Laissez Faire – Savoir Fare, detailing the foods of the region.

Hotels

  • Galveston, Texas’ hotel, Hotel Galvez is on track to fully reopen on October 15.
  • The Nickelodeon Family Suites by Holiday Inn in Orlando, Fla., is offering two different day passes for families to enjoy all of the resort’s amenities without staying overnight. Choose from either the Character Day Pass or the All Access Day Pass.
  • Stay three or more nights at Jekyll Island Club Hotel on Jekyll Island, Ga., and receive a $100 gas redemption voucher. Be sure to use GASRED when making your reservations. This offer is good until  March 13, 2009.
  • The Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, Fla., is offering a Family Escape package that includes garden-view accommodations and free kids’ meals for children under 12. The package is good through December 18.
  • Thinking about heading to NOLA for a quick weekend getaway? Consider staying at the International House Hotel. This boutique hotel, located in the Central Business District area, is offering some “cool” rates for some “cool” fall fun. Better act soon, because the deal ends December
  • Romance is definitely in the air with Inns of Elegance’s Romance is Inn the Air Honeymoon contest. That’s right, the six historic inns in St. Augustine, Fla., have joined together to create an incredible package that includes a four night stay. One lucky couple will win each month. To enter, you must submit a 200-word short story online on why “Romance is Inn the Air in St. Augustine.” 
  • Three inns in Savannah, Ga., are joining together for Breast Awareness Month during October. From pink hats to pink desserts, the innkeepers of Azalea Inn and Gardens, Green Palm Inn, and Zeigler House Inn are turning to all things pink to raise money this month. In addition, they are donating $5/room/night and are asking the guests to match or add funds as well.
