- We love to celebrate our food in the South. Nearly every month there is some sort of food festival happening somewhere in the region. Here is a sampling of some of the food events occurring soon. On January 27, the Lowcountry Oyster Festival at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, S.C. will grill around 65,000 pounds of oysters. Oysters will be sold by the bucket. In addition, the festival will also feature oyster-shucking and oyster eating contests.
Let’s see, there’s garlic pizza, garlic black beans and rice, and even garlic ice cream (yes, you read that right) at the 9th Delray Beach Garlic Festival in Delray Beach, Fla. On February 8-10, you can sample some very creative garlic dishes.
Who doesn’t love chocolate? In Fairfax, Va., there is a two-day Chocolate Lovers Festival. From February 2-3, you can enjoy the Chocolate Challenge and a Taste of Chocolates.
- See the Elk in Kentucky. Join the guided tours offered at Jenny Wiley State Park (Prestonsburg) on January 26 - 27; February 9,16,23; March 1,8,5; and Buckhorn Lake State Park (Buckhorn) on February 1-2.
- Laredo, Texas knows how to put on a party for the nation’s first president. The 111th Washington’s Birthday Celebration is 31 days of events, including the Jalapeno Festival on February 22-23.
- Join the Thomas Edison House Museum in Louisville, Ky., and grab a piece of light bulb cake as they celebrate Mr. Edison’s 160th birthday on February 10.
