News and Happenings Around the Region
Even though school may be back in session for some of us, that doesn’t mean the fun is over in the South. Take a look at some of the events going on in the region.
- Don’t forget that the “World’s Largest Yard Sale” is happening this weekend. You never know what deals what you might find and new places you might discover en route. Now if you can’t make it to that particular yard sale, there’s the Route 11 Yard Sale that covers 43 miles in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia, and West Virginia’s Largest Yard Sale in Buckhannon.
- Celebrate National Marina Day on August 9 at such places as Lazy Days Marina in Buford, Ga., and in Florida at Clearwater Municipal Marina, Amelia Island Yacht Basin, City of Hollywood Marina, Miamarina at Bayside, Fish Tale Marina in Fort Myers Beach, and Fisherman’s Village Yacht Basin in Punta Gorda.
- The Pennington Balloon Championship in Baton Rouge, La., ends on Sunday, August 10. Scheduled events for the weekend include the balloon lift and the extremely neat balloon glow at night. There’s also a children’s village and live entertainment.
- If you find yourself in Clarksdale, Miss., this weekend, be sure to stop by the Sunflower River Blues & Gospel Festival. As you know, Clarksdale is the “birthplace of the blues,” and this event has been recognized by USA Weekend as one of the top 10 places to hear the best of America’s music. Want to make a weekend out of it? Forgo those chain hotels and make reservations as soon as possible at either Shack Up Inn or The Big Pink Guesthouse. Grab a bite eat at Ground Zero Blues Club or at Madidi.
- ‘Tis the season for the beginning of state fairs. The State Fair of West Virginia in Lewisburg runs through August 16. The Kentucky State Fair in Louisville is scheduled for August 14-24.
- August 9 and 10 is the 38th Annual Sneads Ferry (N.C.) Shrimp Festival. The event features live entertainment, arts & crafts booths, a beer and wine garden featuring wines specifically made for the festival, and yes, of course, shrimp.
- If your travels take you to the Florida Panhandle this weekend, the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola is hosting a “Go Fly Zone” on August 9 that includes demonstrations and talks about flying.
