Let’s Go to the Mountains: Dollywood’s 18th Annual Smoky Mountain Christmas Festival

by Apryl on November 19th, 2007

If I had to choose a time of the year to visit any of the South’s theme parks, I would choose to visit during the holiday season; surely you didn’t think I would say middle of July, right? There is just something about the atmosphere - the lights, the special shows, the music and so much more that makes it a memorable time.

This year’s Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Festival is no exception. Located in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., from November 10 - December 30, the theme park is decorated with 3.5 million holiday lights. With that alone, how can you not get into the holiday mood?

In addition, you can enjoy of performances, including Dollywood’s Babes in Toyland, Christmas in the Smokies, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, and An Appalachian Christmas.

Be sure to visit Santa in his workshop, where he will be until Christmas Eve. You can’t miss it, it is the place surrounded by  larger-than-life-sized toys and an 18ft. Christmas Tree.

Don’t miss out on the two nightly parades and other events that will be going on during this time. Of course, being at a theme park, you have to ride some rides. Dollywood is home to The Thunderhead, a wild wooden roller coaster that features a 100-foot drop and the Tennessee Tornado that goes up to a speed of 70mph. But don’t worry, there are also tamer rides if you can’t handle thrills like those.
