Let’s Go to the Mountains: Dahlonega, Ga. - Where It’s “Gold”en During the Holidays

by Apryl on November 8th, 2007

Did you know that gold was discovered in Dahlonega, Ga.,  about 20 years before California’s boom? You can still pan for gold here during the Gold Rush Days, held typically on the third week in October. Maybe I’ll unearth some old pictures of me at 12-years-old feverishly panning away, hoping to strike a fortune, but walking away with gold flakes and a lot of garnets.

Anyway, Dahlonega is located a little over an hour from that daily traffic jam we tend to refer to as Atlanta. It’s everything you would expect from a quaint mountain town. There are ample bed and breakfasts, as well as cabin rentals. Dining options vary from mountain cuisine (for instance, think: trout and large portions of sides) to Italian dishes. There is something for every taste.

Dahlonega is also in the heart of the Georgia Wine Trail. Here you will find four vineyards that host wine tastings typically held Thursday - Saturday.

The holiday season is a prime time to visit the area.  Their Old-Fashion Christmas kicks-off about mid-November and is filled with all types of activities held throughout the week. Don’t miss out on the Sleigh Bell Tour, which takes you on a tour of the bed and breakfasts. Talk about something that will get you in the holiday mood!

Whether you are in the area for the holidays or another part of the season, definitely add Dahlonega to your list of places to visit. You won’t be disappointed.
