Let’s Celebrate: National Tourism Week with D.C.’s Icons

by Apryl on July 19th, 2008

As I wrap up my well-over-a-week-long journey celebrating tourism icons through the South, I’ve saved what I consider the two hardest places to narrow down icons in for last.

It took me a while on D.C. because it’s a icon within itself, but I think I came up with two good representations.

  • Oh, Look, it’s Our Capitol: Okay, so the Capitol WashingtonDCCapitolsrmurphy is a safe choice for an icon. Really, what comes to mind with you think of Washington, D.C.? So, maybe that’s not a good question to ask right now. But seriously, you can’t see or take a guided tour (which I highly recommend) of the Capitol without feeling something good -whether it’s a twinge of awe, inspiration or pride. Not only is it rich in history, but the building is considered to be one of America’s architectural centerpieces.

  • Now, How Many Neighborhoods are in D.C.?: One of the many things that sets D.C. apart from other southern states (yes, I know, D.C. isn’t a state, but just play along with me right now) is its neighborhoods. From Dupont Circle FountainatDupontCircleNCinDCto Brookland to perhaps the best-known one, Georgetown and others, have their own personality and style. Truthfully, you won’t find anywhere else in this region that has an eclectic and vibrant group of neighborhoods like D.C.
