It’s the Luck of the Irish, Ya’ll: St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations Southern-Style
Did you know that Savannah, Ga.’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade happens to be one of the longest running ones in the U.S.? It started in 1813 and has been going strong ever since. Savannah is just one of the many places in the south were you can “turn green” for the holiday. Here’s a sampling of what’s going on around the region.
In Arkansas…
- Be sure to wear green so you can be a part of Eureka Springs’ St. Paddy’s Parade.
In Texas…
- For true luck, celebrate the day in the city of Shamrock . Their three day celebration includes an afternoon parade and an evening city-wide dance.
In Mississippi…
- Celebrate with the wonderful and zany Sweet Potato Queens during Mal’s St. Paddy’s Parade and Festival in Jackson. Events include a special children’s parade and other festivities.
In Alabama…
- Enjoy a dish of corned beef and cabbage at Mobile’s 7th Annual Luck of the Irish Celebration. Other events throughout the day include performances by Irish dancers and a parade.
In Florida…
- 30-A turns a wee bit Irish for St. Patrick’s Day. Enjoy a parade, entertainment and more.
In Tennessee…
- From a Leprechaun parade to a Grand Parade to an all-day Carnival, Erin’s 46th Wearin’ of the Green Irish Day Parade and Arts and Crafts Festival is filled with all types of activities for all ages.
In South Carolina…
- Enjoy the St. Patrick’s Day parade in downtown Charleston. Don’t forget to wear green! There is also Irish lunch (corned beef and cabbage) and entertainment after the parade.
In North Carolina…
- Green is definitely the color of the day, and there isn’t a better place to show off your green ware than at Emerald Isle St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Enjoy a day filled with entertainment and an arts and crafts festival.
In Kentucky…
- Count the shamrocks during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Lexington.
In Virginia…
- It’s all about the music for St. Paddie’s Day in Richmond. Enjoy the bands at Shamrock the Block 08. There are also activities and games for the children.
In West Virginia…
- Listen to Irish music while enjoying Irish food at the 22nd Annual Irish Festival Pipestem Resort State Park.
In D.C...
- If you want more music, head to the Shamrock Fest 2008. In addition, there is foods, more entertainment and games.
In Maryland…
- Who doesn’t love a parade? See green at the 8th Annual Gaithersburg St. Patrick’s Day parade.
