It’s Happening in the South…Athfest 2008

by Apryl on June 10th, 2008

While Athens, Ga., is considered to be a typical small, quaint, Southern college town, its music scene is anything but. Rivaling the scenguitars_horizdrve by truckerses in Austin, Texas and Nashville, Tenn., Athens has made its name known both nationally and internationally. For those who don’t know, the town, located in Northeast Georgia, is home to R.E.M., B-52’s and Widespread Panic among other notable musicians.

For the past 11 years, AthFest has been recognizing local, regional and nationally recognized Athens-based talent during the five day festival.

“AthFest is a unique festival in many ways,” comments Michelle Roche, publicist.  “It’s one of the most affordable festivals in the U.S. since most of the band performances and other activities are free of charge.”

This year, the festival is slated for June 18-22. Taking place in downtown Athens, it will feature over 150 bands and musicians.

The fecraftskidsfeststival is something the whole family can enjoy as well. AthFest has a family-friendly outdoor stage venue as well as KidFest, taking place on Saturday and Sunday, that features special jewelry_closeactivities. In addition, the event also hosts a juried artisan market.
