It’s Happening in the South: Barbecue and Memphis in May

Given the fact that Memphis is home Rendezvous, Corky’s, Interstate, Neely’s and many more top-notch barbecue (or BBQ or Bar-B-Que) restaurants, it’s no surprise that the city is considered to be the “Pork BBQ Capital of the World.”

bbq During May 15-17, the best of the best congregate here to compete in the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest not only for money, but bragging rights as well. While this event is open to the public, you can’t sample food from the competitors; however, there the People’s Choice Contest where, for a nominal fee, you receive five samples of competitors’  ‘que and vote for your favorite. In addition, there are also vendors at the event as well.

The barbecue contest is only part of the annual Memphis in May. The month-long celebration kicks off on May 2-4 with the Beale Street Music Festival. Taking place at Tom Lee Park, the event features various music acts that include blues, gospel and rock.

Wrapping up the event is the Sunset Symphony, which is scheduled  on May 24. This concert features performances by the Four Tops and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, followed by fireworks.
