Hidden Gems: Shoal Sanctuary

by Apryl on February 14th, 2008

Chances are you probably haven’t heard of Mossy Head, Fla., near DeFuniak Springs, unless you are very familiar with this area. Typically when you are in Walton County, you have an agenda: heading to the beach. However, there is a reason for taking a slight detour to visit this town. It’s called Shoal Sanctuary, a 50-acre preserve that is definitely a hidden gem. It’s not advertised, nor can you see it from the road. You learn about it by word of mouth.

It’s hard to believe that within an area of growth there are still places that remain untouched. However, Shoals Sanctuary didn’t start out that way.

The preserve was created by the Larson family, who owned nearby land. They acquired the now-preserve back in 2000. It was land filled with waste and junk. In 2001, they began the tedious task of cleaning it up. Once it was cleared, they planted native trees and added a special touch - sculptures. They also added wooden benches and other small touches along the hiking paths.

Today, you can tour the preserve by reservation. Take a hike along the trails, view the sculptures and enjoy the surroundings. You can even pitch in with the chores.

Extend your visit by staying overnight in the small farm house or the small trailer. If you like to camp out, be sure to bring a tent to enjoy sleeping under the stars.

While there isn’t an admission fee, monetary donations are welcomed as are “gifts to the land.”

Shoal Sanctuary provides an opportunity to return to nature. Whether you stop by on the way to the beach, or make the stop a mini-vacation, the experience will stay with you.
