Hidden Gems: Eagle Island, Georgia
“I tell people that we have one of the best backyards in America,” comments Andy Hill (Captain Andy), proprietor of Eagle Lodge, located on Eagle Island, Ga.
And he isn’t exaggerating, either.
What may be considered to be one of Georgia’s best-kept secrets, Eagle Island is blessed ten-fold with coastal Georgia’s natural beauty. Of course, for some this maybe perhaps second or equal the
island’s other draw: seclusion. See, the 10-acre Eagle Island, located 10 minutes from Darien, is accessible only by boat. But don’t worry if you don’t have one, because Hill can ferry you to and from Darien. You also have the option of renting a boat as well if you so desire.
Sounds tempting? Well, that’s just a start.
The Lodge
The lodge, built six years ago, the over 3,000-square foot property can accommodate up to 10 guests. One of the many highlights of the property has to be the 1,500-square foot screened-in porch. There’s also full chef’s kitchen and lots of room.
Of course, you aren’t cut off totally from civilization (unless you want to be), since the lodge also has satellite TV and wireless Internet.
The Outdoors
Did I mention that Eagle Island is about 30 minutes (again, via boat) from St. Simons and according to Hill, about 15 minutes from the ocean. Not only that, but the island is about a 15-minute boat ride to Sapelo Island.
“Sapelo Island is about six-and-a-half miles of secluded beach,” states Hill. “You can enjoy spending time strolling along the beach.”
Hill says he can also arrange for fishing charters. If you happen to bring your boat, he will provide you with take-out charts and local waterway guides.
Ever went kayaking? Well, if you never had, there’s not excuse not to here because there’s a tandem kayak for use during your stay.
If you rather spend time on land, you’ll find back at the lodge a 20 x 30 dock on the river that includes an umbrella to relax under, and an outdoor swing to perhaps take a nap or two in. You can also fish off the dock with the available rods, tackle and bait.
Try your hand at crabbing with the blue crab traps (and instructions) that are provided as well.
A Nature Surprise
“Another interesting and/or neat feature has to be the eagle’s nest on the property,” says Hill. “It’s an active bald eagle nest. They come in September and leave in May. So, you have that large window of opportunity to enjoy them.”
He points out that you can observe the nest from the porch, or while relaxing in the hot tub in front of the fireplace.
Eagle Island is perfect for those looking to reconnect or for a large family gathering. Hill says whether you are staying for two days (minimum) or longer, he will work with you to help customize your experience here.
“It’s a place to go and enjoy the solitude,” says Hill. “You have the opportunity to do something that you probably haven’t done in years - talk, spend time together and relax.”
“Here, there’s no stress or worries.”
