Hidden Gem: Grand Isle, Louisiana

by Apryl on April 4th, 2008

If Grand Isle, La., hasn’t been a blip on your travel radar, perhaps it is time to look closer at this barrier island. About a two-and half hour drive from Baton Rouge, Grand Isle is different from any other place in the state.

Situated at the mouth of Barataria Bay where it meets the Gulf of Mexico, the barrier island is a survivor. Withstanding many hurricanes, some that nearly destroyed the area, it bounces back. While it is the only Louisiana barrier island inhabited, don’t think that Grand Isle is desolate. Quite the opposite, it is a thriving community with shops and restaurants.

Commonly referred to as Louisiana’s Cajun Bahamas because of its location deep in Cajun County, Grand Isle is best noted for its fishing opportunities. The barrier island is the site of the highly attended International Tarpon Rodeo. Regardless of your experience, you won’t have a problem reeling in a catch.

When it coEntranceStationatGrandIsleEastStateParkLouisianaTourismmes to scenic beauty, nothing in the state or the Gulf Coast can compare. From its beaches to its outdoors, you can walk, hike, or do absolutely nothing but relax. Spend the day walking on the beach, fishing, or crabbing at Grand Isle State Park. Pack a picnic and enjoy the view. It is also a perfect spot for camping adventure.

Mark our calendars for April 18-20 - The Grand Isle Migratory Celebration. The weekend is filled with different events, including guided tours and an arts and crafts show.

Have been visiting GI since childhood. Great place to go in summer or autumn. Summers are busy and hectic; autumn is best. Kids are in school and the island is quiet. Great fishing, good beaches and lots of place to stay. Also houses for sale. Love the sunsets and early mornings too.
