Gotta Do This: Southern Odysseys Historical Journeys

by Apryl on September 18th, 2008

One of the best way to learn about a destination is through a guided tour (as opposed to me, who decides to get lost and try to find her way back) by someone who intimately knows the area.

SO_logo Southern Odysseys Historical Journeys in Columbus, Ga., opens up a whole new Columbus to locals and visitors.

Created in 2005 by local resident, Monica Cobis, who is no stranger to leading tours. After receiving a BS in Recreation Administration, she became a certified Tour Guide Manager and lead hikes in northern California for nature outings. She also worked with the National Park Service on Alcatraz. In fact, her behind-the-scenes tour, “In the Shadow of Death,” received an award. She was also the co-creator of the Alcatraz Kidz Tourz.

Once she returned to Columbus, Cobis began conducting  historical research interviews, and a year later, she put together three walking tours covering different genres of history: “i Spy,” “River City Tour,” and “Walk with the Shadows.” pdf_2008_files_rack_cards

“The ‘i Spy’ kids tour is fun, interactive and educational,” she comments. “Who doesn’t like playing hide-n-seek by flashlight? Even adults want to join in on the game.”

Cobis adds during the “River City Tour,” one gets a taste of the South - literally.

“The stops include sampling cinnamon bread and pear chutney, or homemade fudge. There are also a stop at an artist collective, and sometimes free performances at the Schwob School of Music.”

The “Walk with the Shadows” tour, featuring ghosts and legends, is the most popular.

“The one and a half hour walking tour is full of stories of haunted houses, murder mystery, lynchings, assassinations and ghosts that still linger on the riverfront. The tour also talks about one of the top ten most haunted buildings in the U.S. - the Springer Opera House.”

So, the next time you’re in Columbus, take one of these tours. You just never know what you might learn. Be sure the check Southern Odysseys’ website for latest information on schedules and how to make reservations.
