Tales from the Road: It’s Game Day, Ya’ll

My travels for this weekend have taken me home, well, my surrogate home of five years (yes, I was on the five-year plan), Tuscaloosa, Ala. Now, any Southerner worth their salt knows what happens on Saturdays in the fall in this region.

Football. More importantly, college football.

It’s a written rule not to plan anything of importance (wedding, births and even deaths) during this time, especially if there’s a home game is going on, because no one will show up to that other event.

Batter Up! Minor League Baseball in the South

The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, and the smell of peanuts and hot dogs wafting through the stands on a warm night represents summer for many. Yes, it’s time for baseball, Crackerjacks and all of that good stuff. Here in the South, you are never at a lost for watching a good nine (or longer) innings.

Even if you follow baseball marginally, you probably all ready know about the major league teams, but are you aware of the minor leagues? Do such names as the Chattanooga Lookouts, Jacksonville Suns, Bluefield Orioles, Round Rock Express or Carolina Mudcats sound familiar? If not, you just might be missing out on some great games.

If you are looking for some summer fun, take in a minor league baseball game in the South. Aside from hot dogs, peanuts and home runs – you might discover a new talent or two.

Some Of Us Know More Than Others

I know that there are lots of Footballers out there, the American version as well as the European version. Actually, it’s the European football aka soccer that is popular in our house thanks to a husband who use to play, but this month’s theme for me was digging up what I could find on football in the south. Lets just say that I did my best and leave it at that. Ask me about restaurants, beaches or shopping and I’m right up there, but suddenly I was out of my element this month. But if you are a fan, head over to Europe String where everyone is talking about football.

Ice Skating in Florida

When we were in California a couple of months ago, I shopped at a mall that actually had an ice rink as one of the attractions. To be quite honest, I never expected to find people taking a break from their shopping to pull on a pair of skates… but it happened. My daughter and I actually sat and watched for a half hour or so. People were having the time of their lives!!

But that leads me to the topic for this post. If there are skating rinks in California malls, could you find something similar in Florida? With the temperatures last week, even I would have been tempted. That is, if they could keep the ice frozen long enough! But I googled the topic and sure enough, I found a list of rinks just waiting for you… Does this sound odd to you or is it just me? Ice rinks in Florida?? Yeah, it’s probably just me!
