6 Reasons to Visit Virginia Beach, Virginia

by Apryl on May 2nd, 2008

Offering a 300-foot wide beach, you know you are in a good place when the bigstockphoto_Virginia_Beach_221132 Guinness Book of World Record designated it as the “World’s Longest Pleasure Beach.” Yet, don’t think that is what Virginia Beach (VaBeach) is all about; however, as important as it is, the city is home to so much more. Here you’ll find  the Oceana Naval Air Station, one of the only four US Navy Master jets bases in the U.S.; the historic Cavalier Hotel, and the over-700,000 gallon Virginia Aquarium and Marine Center.

Want to know more? Here are six of many reasons to visit Virginia Beach.

bigstockphoto_Virginia_Beach_Boardwalk_190172 On the Boardwalk:  Along the resort area, which is filled with cafes, shops, and hotels, is the three-mile Boardwalk (named one of the best seven Best American Boardwalks by Discovery.com), evoking memories of past beach resorts. Today, the boards have changed to concrete and it is suitable for jogging, walking, bicycling, and people watching. Don’t worry if you didn’t bring your bike, you can always rent one. The Boardwalk also hosts live nightly entertainment and concerts.

Get Outdoors: With over fifty square miles of lakes, rivers, and salt marshes, you will find that there are ample outdoor activities awaiting you. Take a guided kayak tour at First Landing State Park, the state’s most visited state park.  Back Bay National Wildlife Refugee is an 8,000-acre barrier island type with beaches, dunes, woodlands and marshes. From Back Bay, you can access False Cape State Park, complete with beaches and nine miles of hiking and biking trails.

Have a Plate of Crabs: Enjoy of bowl of She-Crab Soup at Charlibigstockphoto_Blue_Crabs_804189e’s Seafood Restaurant. Order crab cakes at The Lucky Star. Try the Chesapeake Bay Soft Shell Crabs at LynnHaven Fish House. Dine on The Chesapeake (sandwich) or Crabmeat Norfolk at Chick’s Oyster Bar.

See Museums:  The Old Coast Guard Station provides you with a more in-depth look into the work of U.S. Life Saving Service and U.S. Coast Guards. The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum and de Witt Cottage are two separate museums inside one another. The Heritage Museum, inside de Witt Cottage (last cottage on the Boardwalk) promotes waterfowl artifacts and art. The Cottage itself provides images and information on the early Virginia Beach.

Take a Tour: If you are interested in either self-guided or guided tourbigstockphoto_Old_Cape_Henry_Lghthouse_2258805s, VaBeach offers some interesting ones. You can tour Cape Henry Lighthouse, the official symbol for the City of Virginia Beach.   Built in 1792, the Lighthouse has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. Father of Holistic Medicine, Edgar Cayce, selected Virginia Beach as the site for his studies. Today the Association for Research and Enlightenment is open to the public for tours.

Fish off of Chesapeake Bay Tunnel Bridge: This 4-lane, 20-mile long bridge connects Virginia Beach/Norfolk to Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Bring some poles and bait to drop a line off of Sea Gull Pier, which extends into the Chesapeake Bay.
