5 More Things to See in Georgia

by SP on June 26th, 2007

1. Apparently there is an old city once named Petersburg ,built in the 1790s, and it is presently buried below the lake at Bobby Brown State Park. So how do they really know that it is there?? Apparently you can see the foundations when the water levels are low! Source.

2. And you thought Las Vegas was the place to get married. Apparently Georgia has a story of its own. The city of Ringgold was once the place to get married quickly in Georgia, but that had nothing to do with its name. It is named for Samuel Ringgold. So what’s the story about getting married in this small town. Apparently you don’t have to wait very long for the blood test results. And I thought that this was amusing… “one testing laboratory in the community offers a combination test/wedding package and sells clocks with the inscription “I got married in Ringgold, Ga.”

3. The next time you are cruising through Adel, Georgia, you might be interested in knowing that it was originally called Puddleville. So how did it get its new name?? “Local lore has it that the postmaster saw the name “Philadelphia” and plucked “Adel” from the middle.” I think that I like the original name better… no offence to the new name. Puddleville simply makes you wonder about the sort of town it might be. Source

4. Coca-Cola was invented in May 1886 by Dr. John S. Pemberton in Atlanta, Georgia. The name “Coca-Cola” was suggested by Dr. Pemberton’s bookkeeper, Frank Robinson. He penned the name Coca-Cola in the flowing script that is famous today. Coca-Cola was first sold at a soda fountain in Jacob’s Pharmacy in Atlanta by Willis Venable. My sister works for this company. I wonder if she knows this little piece of its history? Source

5. Southern charm likely accounts for Atlanta, Georgia, and Dallas, Texas, being cited the best U.S. cities for friendliness in a 1997 Gallup poll. I guess that is a very good reason to spend a little time in Atlanta. Usually, we drive straight through. This summer, we are going to stop! Source
