5 Fabulous Places in the South to Celebrate Mom
Forgo the flowers this year and take Mom somewhere special for Mother’s Day (or thereafter). Here are five places that will make every mom feel like she is number one in your life.
- If You Want to Pamper Mom, head to Hot Springs, Ark., also known as “Spa City.” To give you a little background to the name, the city of Hot Springs is known for its thermal water, made from the 47 hot springs that flow from the slope of Hot Springs Mountain at a temperature of about 143°F. For centuries many sought refuge from aliments by immersing themselves in the waters at the bath houses. Located in the heart of the Hot Springs National Park (the country’s only national park located inside a city) is Bathhouse Row.
Only one of the eight bathhouses located here is operational - the Buckstaff Bath House. Now, there are numerous spas nearby, such as the Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa and the Austin Hotel & Conference Center that offer thermal mineral water baths.

- If You Want to Take Mom Shopping, visit Sevierville, Tenn. The city is home to over 120 high-end outlet stores, including Your Scrapbook Superstore, which happens to have the largest scrapbook supply inventory in the nation.
The shopping extravaganza doesn’t end at the outlets, there are numerous antique malls, boutique and speciality stores, flea markets and more. There isn’t a better way to bond with mom than through some serious shopping. Shopping in Sevierville (right), courtesy of Tennessee Tourism
- If Mom Enjoys a Glass of Wine Every Now and Then, take her to explore the Yadkin Valley Wine Country in North Carolina.
Located in the Piedmont region of the state, there over 20 wineries on the trail. Aside from the wine, be sure to explore the town of Mount Airy, boyhood hometown of Andy Griffin and said to be the inspiration to Mayberry. End your visit by taking mom in a hot air balloon ride over the wine country with Yadkin Valley Balloon Adventure. Cabernet grapes (left), courtesy of North Carolina Tourism
- If Mom is a Foodie, head straight to the Florida Gulf Islands, where it is “time to be a Florida Foodie.” From May 1 through mid-June, September/October 2008, and January 2009, you and your mom can create one-of-a-kind culinary travel experience throughout Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, and the mainland areas of Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch. There is a special site devoted to this experience where you can create you itinerary, locate recipes and more.
- If Mom Likes the Outdoors, visit Garrett County, Md., and bond in the outdoors. Spend the day at Deep Creek Lake State Park, the state’s largest freshwater lake, or see the 80-foot stone arch bridge at Cassleman River Bridge State Park. Spend quality time hiking (or mountain biking) in Garrett State Forest.
