It’s Happening in the South…National Peanut Festival in Dothan, Ala.

Roasted, boiled, baked, fried – when you enjoy your peanuts this weekend, well you can thank the 100-mile radius around Dothan, Ala., for them. Yes, that’s right – half of the peanuts grown in the U.S. are found in this area.
And there isn’t a better way to celebrate the peanut harvest than at the 65th Annual National Peanut Festival in Dothan that kicks off on October 31 and runs through November 9.
Okay, I admit that I’m a little bias toward the festival since this is my hometown. I have many memories about Midnight Madness, a certain Gravitron ride that …read more

Let’s Go to the Mountains: Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia

Let’s Go to the Mountains: Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia

At first glance, the two-year old Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia in Sautee Nacoochee (near Helen) doesn’t look like your typical museum. It definitely takes advantage of its surrounding, the Sautee Nacoochee Valley, with lots of glass, natural light and open spaces. So it would only make sense that the museum would be recognized for its architecture. The museum, designed by Robert M. Cain, architect in Atlanta,Ga., was recently awarded American Institute of Architects Honor Award for Excellence in Architecture. This was one of only two honor awards given out this year. The award is the highest design award …read more

Tales from the Road: Can’t Beat a Good Beach Breakfast

(Due to technical difficulties, Tales from the Road was delayed)
Seems as if all I have done on my beach trip is eat. Which I guess isn’t that bad, but I did have the opportunity to enjoy Pier Park, walk (and relax) on the beach and take in a quick game of putt-putt.
However, food was a very important part of this trip, as it is with every trip.
You know, I’ve talked about lunch, dinner and now it’s time to discuss the most meal of the day – breakfast.
I’m going to introduce you to two different places in Panama City Beach. …read more

It was decision time. Should I have she-crab soup from Firefly? Oh, wait a minute – look at those hush puppies at Pier 77! Now, those look good. Wonder if I can just have an order (or two) of those? There’s the Boatyard, but oh no, they didn’t bring their frozen key lime pie on a stick, but their shrimp and grits martini sounds quite interesting.
But wait -  there’s more to see.
Oh, look, there’s Hammerhead Fred’s, and what’s that over there? Someone serving the “original Krabby Patties.”
What …read more
