Labor Day Weekend Happenings in Texas
Why not go all out and celebrate the end of summer Texas-style? You know the Lone Star state will celebrate Labor Day weekend in a rather “large” fashion.
Here’s an idea of what’s happening around the state:
For those who enjoy food festivals, there’s the 35th Annual World Championship BBQ Goat Cook-Off taking place on August 30 in Brady. The event includes arts and crafts booths, a goat lunch, goat cook-off competition and a street dance. It’s fitting that Texas would hosts a celebration that included the world’s largest chili pot. During the Chili Superbowl XXVII in Buffalo Gap on August 30 – September 2, you can sample said chili as well as enjoy a host of activities throughout the weekend. The 57th Annual Sausage Festival is scheduled for August 31 in New Berlin.
- Toast the end of summer with a glass of wine and good music. The Kerryville Wine and Music Festival is slated for August 29-31. Events include wine seminars and live music performances.
- Bats Alive! During the spring and summer, underneath the Congress Avenue Bridge
is the preferred congregation place for around a million Mexican free-tailed bats. The bridge holds the distinction of being the largest urban bat colony in North America. On August 30-31, celebrate the bats during BatFest. This event includes exhibits, arts and crafts and more.
- Watch as colorful balloons launch during the Big Bend Balloon Bash in Alpine on August 30 – September 1.
- Experience the Wild West this Labor Day weekend during Celebrate Bandera 2008 on August 30-31. Scheduled events include cattle drive and reenactments.
- The 22nd Annual Marfa Lights Festival is happening August 29 – August 31. Enjoy craft vendors, food, street dance and more. You may be wondering exactly what the Marfa Lights are? No one really know. While they still remain a mystery, you can view them on Highway 90, about nine miles from the city
and try to determine what exactly they are for yourself. Another interesting fact about Marfa – it was where Giant, James Dean’s last movie, was filmed.
