Goodnight Summer, Hello Fall

Goodnight Summer, Hello Fall

Can’t believe (or maybe I just don’t want to) summer is over. Even though the season is gone, doesn’t mean the fun is. There is a lot, and I do mean a lot happening in the South as the weather turns somewhat cooler, or perhaps the better thing to say is less humid. From festivals to corn mazes to weekend trips, there so much to do in the region. Keep reading Southern Byways to find out the latest.

Tales from the Road: There’s Always Time for a Seafood Dinner While at the Beach

Tales from the Road: There’s Always Time for a Seafood Dinner While at the Beach

During the last evening of my Hilton Head Island, S.C., getaway, I enjoyed the much required seafood dinner. Honestly, you can’t leave any beach with having seafood at least once (or in my case, many times.)
One of my favorite places is the Old Oyster Factory. One thing unique about the restaurant is that it’s built on the location of an old oyster cannery. You also can’t get any better than here when it come to views from the restaurant. The style of the restaurant allows for water views  and sunset watching.
When it comes to the menu, the appetizer …read more

Hacky Sack Your Way to a Discounted Hotel Room

Hacky Sack Your Way to a Discounted Hotel Room

I’ve always been fascinated by the hacky sack. For hours, I’d be fascinated by how the right move, the right touch to the hacky sack would keep it in motion going back and forth before a group of friends. It also had the ability to bring a complete group of strangers together and break the ice. Unfortunately, I was never lucky enough to master the art of hacky sack. As much as I tried to make it happen, it just wasn’t meant to be.
Although some people may find the art of hacky sack a waste of time and energy, now …read more

Tales from the Roads: Creative Doughnuts are a Great Way to Start the Day

Tales from the Roads: Creative Doughnuts are a Great Way to Start the Day

As a general rule when I’m on the road, I’m always on the lookout for good, local places to get breakfast. Well, I definitely made a discovery this morning.

The Flamingo House of Doughnuts (843/686-4606), located in the Park Plaza Shopping Center (near the movie theater and Harris Teeter), is somewhere you can create your own doughnuts. You decide on the glaze and the toppings , and it’s made fresh for you on a homemade thick cake doughnut.  If you’re watching your calories, this isn’t for you. But since you’re on vacation, anything goes, right?  They also have their speciality …read more

It’s Happening in the South…Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach (Beaches of South Walton) on August 30

This isn’t your traditional film or art festival. You don’t sit and silently watch the films, or quickly walk by a static exhibit. Here, you have the opportunity to walk around and take it all in. Some places, you can even be part of it.
“Extraordinary unique,” is how Mike Ragsdale, town evangelist, describes Alys Beach’s upcoming Digital Graffiti Festival.
And you know, he just might be on to something here.
