Trails in the South: Alabama Scenic River Trail
See a whole new side of Alabama. Quite a few rivers run through the state of Alabama. In fact, the Alabama Scenic River Trail covers 631 miles (seven rivers and two creeks) from the Alabama/Georgia state line to Fort Morgan located in Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Opened in June, it is the largest trail of its kind in the U.S., and perfect if you are in the mood for a day or weekend trip. Don’t worry, you aren’t expected to cover all 631 miles. The trail’s trip planner provides some great suggestions of different routes you can take as well as what you can see and do along the way. Section guidebooks are also available for purchase and provide a more in-depth view of the different lakes and river. The trail is accessible for canoeists, kayakers and those who travel the waterways by powerboats. Interested, but don’t have a way to travel on the water? Don’t worry, there are a number of outfitters that can get you going on your way.
