Places to See and Things to Do During Black History Month

Celebrate Black History month during February by visiting some of the historical sites around the South:

  • Take a self-guided driving tour starting in Richmond, Va., which once held the title of "Birthplace of Black Capitalism." Sites along the way include Capitol Square and Monument Avenue.

The Charlotte-Mecklenberg African-American Heritage Tour in Charlotte, N.C., includes 18 stops. This self-guided driving tour takes you by churches and two slave burial grounds.

  • Stay at places that have ties to the Underground Railroad. According to BedandBreakfast.com, in 1859, the owner of the now Amelia Island Williams House (Amelia Island, Fla.) allowed escaped slaves following the Underground Railroad to use his home as a refuge during their trek to freedom.
