Today’s Destination – Newport Aquarium, Kentucky

Newport AquariumAny outdoor lovers in your family?? If so, they are going to love the Newport Aquarium. It features 11,000 animals representing over 600 species. That seems rather impressive to me! It also contains one million gallons of fresh and salt water. Sounds as if you could spend a lot of time there!! Here’s just some of what they have to offer…

“Explore our 70 exhibits and 14 galleries, including five seamless acrylic tunnels totaling over 200 feet in length, featuring an amazing variety of aquatic life from around the world. Just look at what awaits you on your journey through the world’s most exotic and exciting waterways.

Walk along the floor of the Amazon River, during its flooded season, thanks to our 32.5 feet long seamless tunnel, which bisects an 117,000-gallon fresh water tank. Here you’ll come face-to-face with an Arapaima, the largest of all freshwater fish and exotic fish like the Pacu, which are the size of trash can lids.”

There’s also an exhibit called Gator Bayou. I think that I would be quite happy to check out these gators in this kind of environment. Lets just say that I’ve been hearing a few stories later and quite frankly… gators scare me. But I like what Gator Bayou has to offer…

“To pass through this exhibit you need to cross our bridge. Look to the right and you see a small shanty. Look down and you see alligators – our bridge is fitted with two 8×8-foot sections of acrylic allowing our American Alligators to swim beneath you! These ‘gators are mere inches away so along with turtles and fish, great examples of species thriving in this dark, humid swampland.”

Sounds like the perfect afternoon for the entire family!

And don’t forget to check out Shark Alley!

Location… In Newport, Kentucky, across from downtown Cincinnati.
