March Port Isobel LightHouse – Texas
I don’t know what it is about lighthouses that captivate people, but this is certainly a popular one in the state of Texas. And here is a little tidbit that you might find interesting. See the very top of the lighthouse. There have been more than a few brides and bridegrooms who have climbed the seventy five steps and three ladders to get up there. You have to admit, it is an interesting place to exchange wedding vows.
Admission: Tours are given 7-days a week. Single Ticket: Adults $3, Seniors (55 and over) $2, Students $1 (5 years old to college) …read more

King Cake
“The King Cake tradition came to New Orleans with the first French settlers and has stayed ever since. Like the rest of Mardi Gras during those early days, the king cake was a part of the family’s celebration, and really didn’t take on a public role until after the Civil War. In 1870, the Twelfth Night Revelers held their ball, with a large king cake as the main attraction. Instead of choosing a sacred king to be sacrificed, the TNR used the bean in the cake to choose the queen of the ball. This tradition has carried on to this …read more
Car Travel Help for Kids
I’m hoping that kids traveling in a car are a lot more patient that I was during our trip to Florida, but just in case they aren’t, this little kit looks like it could keep them occupied!!
Now I wonder why a company isn’t coming up with something like this for us… big kids?? What would I hope to find in it?? Good question. I will have to think about that.

Can the cold weather give you a cold?
Okay, I know that it can’t, but I’ve only been home about a week and a half and suddenly, I’m aching all over the place and I feel about as rotten as you can get. And, I’m cold… like in the chills. I think that it is just the beginning of a kick ass cold, but I’m not enjoying it at all. Then again, who enjoys colds? And, I was doing so well. I had been bundling up with lots of layers and just beginning to think that just maybe winter in the north isn’t as bad as I thought. …read more

Stebco Ballistic Catalog/Computer Case on Wheels
Is there anyone alive who can simply leave the computer at home when they go on vacation? I know that I can’t, but it is a major pain in the butt to have to carry it. The old case over the shoulder can be incredibly heavy, but this idea has some merit. You simply drag it along behind you.

Southern Hushpuppies
There has to be about a zillion different versions and every time we stopped at The Cracker Barrel, corn bread muffins were always served with dinner. And I wasn’t kidding about all the varieties. First you have…
New Orleans Skillet Cornbread
“This cornbread makes an excellent side for “New Orleans Red Beans and Rice” recipe #87365. This recipe also comes from the same cookbook, “The New Orleans CookBook” by Rima and Richard Collin. I highly recommend using bacon grease (I used pepper bacon) rather than shortening to grease the cast iron skillet. I have made this recipe both ways and the …read more
How did the Mardi Gras Begin?
“In 1699, Mardi Gras was first mentioned in North America. A French explorer camped by the Mississippi River, fifty miles south of today’s New Orleans, named Pierre le Moyne, Sieur d’Iberville, first brought the term to the United States.
By the 1700s, Mardi Gras was celebrated in both Mobile, Alabama, and in New Orleans, Louisiana. Somewhat more sedate then today’s festivities, the day was celebrated with private balls. In both cities random streets played hosts to costumed citizens.”
And if you are a trivia buff, you are going to find a lot of that on this page as well. Now, off to …read more
Bomb Island, South Carolina
“Bomb Island on Lake Murray each spring and summer is the home of a very unusual event. Each year thousands of Purple Martins return to this island to roost for the summer. The island has been declared a bird sanctuary and it is quite a sight to watch these birds return to Bomb Island each day around sunset. ”
Can you immagine just how gorgeous that island has to be every evening! And apparently South Carolina has a lot to offer when it comes to checking out the birds of the region!
