“ca. 1860-1861. Lower Woodville Rd. The grandest octagonal house in America. Superb example of mid-19th century Oriental style. Designed for Haller and Julia Nutt, it retains original furnishings. Finial atop dome was reconstructed in 1993 by the Pilgrimage Garden Club. National Historic Landmark.”

I’ve toured Longwood twice! Late ’80s & early ’90s!!
What can compete w/this 6 story Octagonal mansion!?! Looking out from an upper story, where the Philadelphia master carpenters stood & watched the Union Troops come thru the woods; leaving their ladders, paint cans, brushes, just as there were in 1860s, to return to Philly… it’s quite a site! Don’t forget the DOZENS of hand-made Corinthian Columns too!!!! Not to mwntion the lowest level (the only one finished & where the Dr. Haller Nutt family lived & his widow carried on. After many years, the Fed. Govt. reimbursed the family as they were Union sympathizers before… & all thru “The War of Northern Aggression”. A southern MUST-SEE!!!!
