Breaking News – Ernesto up to 60 mph, heading to Carolinas

“A hurricane watch was issued for the Carolina coast Thursday and Virginia’s governor declared a state of emergency as Tropical Storm Ernesto gained strength over the Atlantic.
Meanwhile our area (Port Charlotte, Florida) will feel more leftover effects from rain today than it did Wednesday. Rainfall greeted Southwest Floridians Thursday morning and it will likely stay around for most of the day. The sun is supposed be shining this afternoon, but the likelihood of rainfall, and sometimes heavy rainfall, is likely. ”
Fingers crossed for the Carolinas!

Bells toll 1 year after Katrina hit

Bells toll 1 year after Katrina hit

“NEW ORLEANS – Bells tolled in this shattered city Tuesday morning, marking the moment one year earlier when New Orleans’ levees buckled and unleashed a torrent of water that ripped homes from their foundations and sent tens of thousands of residents into an uncertain exile.
As the bells pealed, survivors of the storm gathered outside City Hall, commemorating the moment at 9:38 a.m. when New Orleans began its spiral into a watery hell.”
I remember watching all of it on TV last year but I can’t even imagine what it must have been like for people who actually lived there. How do …read more

Scary choice: Stay or go

Scary choice: Stay or go

“Mandatory hurricane evacuation orders prompt such a low percentage of residents of vulnerable areas to leave, some are suggesting emergency officials should try to scare people into leaving.
“One thing we can do is to make them appreciate what storms can do to their homes,” said Dr. Jay Baker, a sociologist at Florida State University and one of the nation’s ranking experts on emergency response. “Telling people specific results is better than simple evacuation orders. We need to make them understand how horrible it will be to be in their house with the water at a certain height. People need to …read more

“Ernesto threatens Southwest Florida (My corner of Florida)

“Hurricane watch issued for Keys, path remains uncertain
Local leaders are keeping a close eye on Ernesto as projected paths Sunday placed the region, once again, in the storm’s cross hairs.
”It certainly looks like it’s going to impact a significant portion of Florida before it’s all over,” said Max Mayfield, the director of the National Hurricane Center.
Officials issued a hurricane watch for the Florida Keys, where evacuations began Sunday.
Portions of the Florida peninsula — including Charlotte and Sarasota counties — could be placed under a hurricane watch as well.”

New hurricane worries La. after Katrina

New hurricane worries La. after Katrina

“NEW ORLEANS – What was to have been a weekend of remembrance of Hurricane Katrina’s destruction became a weekend of worry as Ernesto strengthened to a hurricane in the Caribbean.
The National Hurricane Center said Ernesto could grow into a Category 3 hurricane by Thursday, menacing a broad swath of the Gulf Coast. Katrina was a Category 3 storm when it ravaged New Orleans a year ago Tuesday.”
I was wondering when we would get hit with a hurricane. It’s been way to quiet but it seems that it is not going to stay that way. I will be watching closely to …read more
